It is so important to go slow and steady when living with a chronic illness. Taking one day at a time and realizing that life is not a race has kept me balanced. I am very fortunate that I was able to receive a sterling silver turtle necklace from Honolulu Jewelry Company. This turtle necklace will remind me the importance of going slow and steady during my healing years! I want to share with you 5 reasons why it’s important to go slow and steady when living with a chronic condition! If you would like to purchase jewelry from the Honolulu Company you can do so my clicking on the pictures at the bottom of this page!

Life is not a race. It’s important to remember that life is not a race when living with a chronic illness. Each person is different and the one thing that I have realized is that we all end up in the same place later in life. We do not need to rush through life. It’s ok if it takes 10 years to graduate college or start a business; just know in your heart that you will eventually accomplish your dreams if you go slow and steady!

Take one day at a time. When living with a chronic illness it’s important to take things one day at a time. It will help you learn what your body/mind needs. Taking one day at a time will help you to not overdue things when you are too tired or too stressed.

Take consistent baby steps. Taking consistent baby steps will help you with not giving up! It’s better to go slow, steady, and stay on course than to go all out and run out of steam.

Take time for yourself. When living with a chronic illness it’s important to take time to let your body rest and heal. Treat yourself to something that will be good for your body/mind, whether it’s a green smoothie, massage, listening to a soothing c.d., etc.

Don’t take life too seriously. Last but not least, don’t take life too seriously when living with a chronic illness. It’s important to laugh. Laughter is healing and good for the heart. Read a funny book or watch a funny TV show/movie. Don’t beat yourself up for unnecessary things. We all are human and will make mistakes but try your best to let it go, forgive, and move on! Life is about enjoying yourself, your loved ones and the moment!

Below is Aesop’s- The Tortoise and the Hare story. We all probably remember this story when we were young but it’s a great reminder that you CAN finish the race by going slow and steady.

Aesop

The Tortoise and the Hare

The Hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. “I have never yet been beaten,” said he, “when I put forth my full speed. I challenge any one here to race with me.”

The Tortoise said quietly, “I accept your challenge.”

“That is a good joke,” said the Hare; “I could dance round you all the way.”

“Keep your boasting till you’ve won,” answered the Tortoise. “Shall we race?”

So a course was fixed and a start was made. The Hare darted almost out of sight at once, but soon stopped and, to show his contempt for the Tortoise, lay down to have a nap. The Tortoise plodded on and plodded on, and when the Hare awoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post and could not run up in time to save the race.

Then the Tortoise said: “Slow but steady progress wins the race.”
